Who Is at Risk? Sepsis Segregation by Age and Gender.

Sprint-2: Unveiling Sepsis Patterns Across Age and Gender

Segregation of sepsis and non-sepsis patients according to age group and gender

The Sepsis Dataset have 40,336 patients records which describes patients’ hourly measures on important biomarkers which leads to 1.5 Million records.

Reason for Segregation of Patients:

Sepsis doesn’t affect everyone in same way or in same pattern. It reacts differently to every age group and gender. By understanding who is at most risk makes prediction more powerful.

Benefits of Segregation of Patients:

Dividing the data according to the age group and gender under sepsis status or label provides the clear picture of the reason, key measures, indictors and impacts on every stage of the patients. From this analysis, we can create better treatment plan according to the age group and gender to prevent patient’s loss which will reduce the mortality rate.

Let’s get into the visualization of Segregation of sepsis and non-sepsis patients according to age group and gender using Butterfly Chart.

Reason for choosing the Butterfly Chart:

Butterfly chart creates a clear parallel visualization of male and female with grouping(age group) along with sepsis status labels instead of line chart and bar chart. I started of with line and bar chart but it worked very well for gender and sepsis status label but it was not clear with age group. It became more clumsy. I came across hipstervizninja blog about butterfly chart where he created male and female population from total population and refereed another video for butterfly effect and it all made sense with my visualization and referred their steps and made the visualization.

We are visualizing the Butterfly which has blue (Male) wings and purple (Female) wings and including green (Non-Sepsis) and red (Sepsis) colors and represents the Patients Count according to the Age Group range and Sepsis Status as well.

Insights from the Butterfly Visualization:

  • We can determine which group and gender of patients are getting affected with sepsis and which group level and gender we need to give priority from the visualized data.

  • As we see, both the side of the wings represents about total patients according to the age groups. But blue wings on left side states about the total male patients for the respective age group whereas the purple wings on right-side states about the total female patients for the respective age group.

  • We have to concentrate more on improving the sepsis treatment care for patients above 50+ age group and considering the gender factor, Male are more prone to sepsis when compared to female.

  • When it comes to 20 below age group which has children and young adults are safe and out of danger from sepsis as per the visualization.

Butterfly Visualization

I want to take a moment to thank my tutors, organizers and my team members for helping me through this process and fine tuning the beautiful visualization.

Thank you for journeying through the visuals and narratives I’ve created.

On the way: My next blog where we build a butterfly chart from the basics.

You're welcome to explore more insights on my Tableau Public profile.
