Understand, Organize, and Customize the Data Pane in Tableau
Understanding the Data Pane
The Data pane, located on the left side of the workspace, displays details of the connected data source and its fields. It is useful for relational data sources and allows users to organize and customize fields efficiently.
When connecting to the data source, Tableau automatically organizes fields in the Data pane as either dimensions or measures:
Dimensions: Text, date, and Boolean values
Measures: Numerical values
Additionally, Tableau generates the following fields:
Measure Names: A dimension containing all measure names
Measure Values: A field containing all measure values
Table Count: The number of records in a table
Geographic Fields: Automatically created Latitude and Longitude fields for geographic data
Fields are further classified as either discrete(blue) or continuous (green).
The Data pane also allows users to customize fields by grouping them into source tables or folders. Users can rename fields and members as well as create hierarchies for drill-down analysis.
The following example illustrates fields grouped by source tables(Orders, People and Returns).

Data sources and Data View
Data source connections appear at the top of the Data pane, organized into tables or folders.
Data View: To view the data, select the data source and click the data view icon, which displays the data.

Customizing the Data Pane
Hiding and Viewing Hidden Fields
Hide unused tables and fields to clean up the Data pane. To view hidden fields again, simply enable the Show Hidden Fields option.
Organizing Data Fields
To convert a measure to a dimension, drag the measure and drop it into the Dimensions area in the Data pane (and vice versa).
Creating Hierarchies:
Help organize data and enable drill-down analysis.
Example : A hierarchy can be created for location-based data by arranging fields such as Region, State, City.
when a hierarchy field is added to a visualization, the data can be drilled up or down using “+” or” – “icons, to view data for states and cities.
The image below shows a hierarchy created for Location

Customizing the Data Pane with Tableau Features
The Data pane menu lets users create features like groups, sets, calculated fields, and parameters. These features can be customized as needed and organized in the Data pane. Below is a brief explanation of each feature.
Groups: Set of combined dimension members used for visualization and comparison.
Sets: Custom fields which define subsets of data based on condition. Sets can be fixed or dynamic for comparison.
Calculated Fields – Create new fields using custom logic and calculations.
Parameters – used as a dynamic variable in calculations, filters or for reference lines.
The image below shows the fields are organized into folders

Summary
The Data pane in Tableau provides organized view of fields from the connected data source, categorized as dimensions or measures. Users can rename, group, and customize fields, create hierarchies for drill-down, and use features like groups and parameters. Hidden fields can also be shown again when needed.
