Tableau Data Foundations(part-1)
Tableau is a powerful data‑visualization tool that helps you turn raw data into clear, interactive dashboards.
1. Tableau is a leading data‑visualization tool used to analyze and present data visually.
2. It allows users to create interactive charts, dashboards, and stories without coding.
3. Tableau connects to multiple data sources, from Excel to databases and cloud platforms.
4. Its drag‑and‑drop interface makes complex analysis simple and fast.
5. Organizations use Tableau to make data‑driven decisions through clear, visual insights.
In this blog, I’ll walk you through three essential building blocks of Tableau: Data Source, Data Type, and Data Fields. Understanding these basics will help you prepare your data correctly and build more accurate visualizations.
1-Data Source
Data Source contains the Connection info of server path for Ex. CSV file or Excel Fire you saved in your local system, and you want to work on to get a productive output. It includes data structure in which order you want to format the table or the order or column to get the info in sequence. Metadata and customization are your semantic layer could be your calculated layer or any hierarchy or group any altered data by user inside tableau.
2- Data type
This is the Main topic I want to describe about, if you are coming from Non-IT Background you need to understand the Data type first before doing work on data file.
In Data analysis Knowing Data type is having secret key to Tableau, the powerful visualization tool.
Data type is a fundamental component in tableau that defines the nature and characteristics of data being analyzed.
Understanding the common Tableau Data Types available in Tableau will enable you to make informed decisions when working with your datasets. Here are some of the frequently used Tableau Data Types:
Numeric Data Types- Includes the data in integer and Floats, which are the for calculation or aggregation for example lab reports values, Profit, tax amount.
String Data Types- String Data Types include details in letters or words like name of customer, city or country name basically it’s stored textual information.
Boolean Data Types – which Stores binary values like True /False or Yes/no which are useful to creating filters and conditional calculations.
Understanding Data Types is crucial for accurate data representation, efficient performance, and effective analysis in Tableau.
Different Data Types in Tableau
A. Integer: Integer Data Types represent whole numbers without decimal places. They are suitable for storing numerical values that do not require fractional precision. Integers are often used for counting, indexing, and performing mathematical calculations and aggregations.
B. Float: Float Data Types are used to represent decimal numbers. They offer greater precision compared to integers and are suitable for data that requires fractional values. Floats are commonly employed for financial data, scientific measurements, and any data that necessitates decimal accuracy.
C. Date/Time: Tableau provides various Data Types to handle date and time information. These include date, time, datetime, and duration. Date Data Types enable the analysis of trends and patterns over time, while time Data Types facilitate precise tracking of events. Datetime Data Types combine both date and time information. Duration Data Types allow for the measurement and calculation of time intervals.
D. String: String Data Types are used to store textual information, such as names, addresses, and descriptions. They are versatile and suitable for categorical data or dimensions. String Data Types support various operations, including concatenation, substring extraction, and pattern matching, which can be leveraged for data transformations and analysis.
E. Boolean: Boolean Data Types store binary values, typically represented as True or False. They are useful for creating filters, conditional calculations, and logical operations. Boolean Data Types are particularly handy for evaluating conditions and creating dynamic calculations based on specific criteria.
Understanding and utilizing these common Data Types in Tableau will empower you to accurately represent and analyze your data, leading to more meaningful and insightful visualizations.

Here we can see in above image Column A and C is having decimal value so it’s called float data type and other numerical values like Quantity, product ID Customer ID having whole number describing Integer data type while text like customer name , email id are the string data type and last two column of dates are example of data and time data type.
3- Data Fields
A database is a set of data arranged in a particular way so that Tableau can use the necessary parts from it. Every database has several fields or records.
A database field refers to a set of values arranged in a table and has the same data type. A field is also known as a column or attribute.
A. Required Fields : These fields must be filled out and skipping them is not an option. You will be presented with an error notice if you do not fill in this field with a value or entry before continuing. If you do not include this information, your database will not be comprehensive.
B. Calculated Fields : These fields do not require entry, but they will be automatically calculated by the system from the existing values in other fields. Usually, this type of field will have a formula embedded in it and if you give the range of data to be taken, it will automatically fill the fields with it.
C. Optional Fields: It is not a condition to fill these up and even if you leave these empty, you will not get an error message. Your database will be complete even without the completion of these fields. Fields are also classified according to the length of the value entered them. You can have Fixed length fields and Variable Length fields.
