Performance Testing Using Postman: Building Fast and Scalable Application

May 1, 2025
4 min read

Application Programming Interface (API) client used developers to send, test, and document API requests and responses. API testing tool that makes it easy to set up automated tests ,It has collection consists of API endpoints with a common access pattern, so that they can be managed together

What is performance testing

Performance testing is defined as a type of non-functional software application will perform under expect workload, The focus of performance testing is checking a software programs

  • speed

  • scalability

  • stability

Performance testing is nothing but the testing the stability and response time of application by applying lad is called as performance testing. stability means ability to stand on design number of users is called stability and response means the time taken to send the request to the server run on the program ang it come back from server is called response time, Load means number of users using the application is called load.

If you developed a application it is able to handle 50 users or not and also you are testing response time.

Why we do performance testing

Performance testing is done to provide stakeholders information about their application regarding speed, stability and scalability, it doesn't give what needs to be improved before product goes to market. so without performance testing software will face a issue means running slow while several users use and poor use of stability, so performance testing will help the software to meet a speed, scalability requirements under expected workloads.

What are the types of performance testing

  1. Load testing : Load testing checks the application ability to perform under anticipated user loads to identify performance bottlenecks before the software application goes live.

  2. Stress testing : It involves testing in application under extreme workloads to see ow it handles high traffic or data processing to identify the break point of application.

  3. Endurance testing : IT is done to make sure the software can handle the expected load over long period of time

  4. Spike testing : It tests the software reaction to sudden large spikes in the load generated by the users.

  5. Volume testing : A large number of data in database and the overall software system behavior is monitored so to check the software applications performance under varying database volumes.

    Tools for API testing

Here are a few popular options:

    Tool Language

    Apache JMeter Java

    Postman + Newman JavaScript

    Locust Python

How to Do API Performance Testing using Postman

First open a postman account and login it will redirect to postman dashboard page and make a new request to the server , and set the method to Get, post, put or Delete add script, body save and click on send we will get response.

What is postman

A postman is a tool it is a platform for building and working with APIs.

What are API request methods

GET method : retrieves information or data from a specified resource.

POST method : submits data to be processed to a specified resource.

PUT method : updates a specified resource with new data.

DELETE method : deletes a specified resource.

  • GET,POST,PUT,DELET are mapped to curd operations curd stands for ,

    GET data to Read,

    POST data to Create,

    PUT data to Update,

    DELETE data to Delete

  • First we have to the import curl command and set the method to GET method then if authorization token is needed we have to set the token and send request we can see response API

  • To run the collection right click on collection and click run

  • It will open a page there you can see performance testing option click on the option

  • Here is the option to set to performance testing so we configure virtual user, test duration as well as load profile so three options are available in load profile to run the test we need to select the one option (example: RAMP) ,virtual users set to 20 and test duration 10 minutes,( suppose there is a 20 virtual users will start running the API test and there is a time duration 10 mins up to that our test is tart will keep running) and click RUN.

  • It shows preparation to run here execution starts ,In this graph x-axis is Number of users execution time duration , y-axis is error rate and response in milli seconds, Down you can see performance details for test duration.

Performance testing Metrics, common parameters which you need to monitor after conducting the performance testing processor usage, memory use disk time, bandwidth, private bytes, response time, maximum active sessions and hit per second.

Create a monitor give a monitor name and select the collection, we can select run this monitor options also and click Run it will redirect to execution process.

What are common Performance problems

so most of performance around the speed, response time, load time. Performance testing is done to make sure an app runs faster enough to keep user attention and interest, they are few problems

  • Long-load time

  • Poor response time

  • Poor scalability

  • Bottlenecking

    some common preferences bottlenecks are ;

  • CPU utilization

  • Memory Utilization

  • Network

  • Operating System limitations

  • Disk usage

Performance testing checks the system performs is expected or not. It helps the system to ensures speed, stable, and scalable.

Happy learning ! 😊
