LOD Expressions in Tableau: A Guide to Powerful Analytics
Updated: Jul 23, 2025
When building dashboards and visualizations in Tableau, we often run into challenges with aggregations ,such as calculating a value at a different level of detail than what is displayed in the view. This is where LOD (Level of Detail) expressions come into play.
In this blog, we’ll look into LOD expressions, explore their types, and walk through practical examples to help you harness their full power.
What are LOD Expressions?
LOD expressions allow you to control the level of granularity at which calculations are performed, regardless of what’s shown in your current visualization. They let you fix, include, or exclude dimensions when calculating values, making them essential for advanced analytics in Tableau.
Types of LOD Expressions
Tableau offers three types of LOD expressions:
FIXED
Syntax: {FIXED [Dimension]: AGG([Measure])}
Calculates the value at the level of the specified dimension(s), ignoring the view's current level of detail.
INCLUDE
Syntax:
{INCLUDE [Dimension]: AGG([Measure])}
Adds the specified dimension(s) to the view’s level of detail, computing the value with more granularity.
EXCLUDE
Syntax:
{EXCLUDE [Dimension]: AGG([Measure])}
Removes the specified dimension(s) from the view’s level of detail, rolling up the aggregation.
Examples of LOD Expressions
FIXED:
To Calculate total sales per region, even when the view shows sales per category.
{FIXED [Region]: SUM([Sales])}
Calculated Field:

Visualization:

We can compare category sales to total regional sales.
INCLUDE:
{INCLUDE [Region]: SUM([Sales])}
Calculated Field:

Visualization:

We can see how category and sub_category contribute to regional totals.
EXCLUDE:
Show total sales per region, even when the view includes categories.
{EXCLUDE [Region]: SUM([Sales])}
Calculated Field:

Visualization

The Above image shows that how the region is omitted from the total sales but still the region dimension is on the view.
When to Use Each Type?
LOD Type | Use When You Want To… |
FIXED | Calculate values independent of the view |
INCLUDE | Bring in additional granularity |
EXCLUDE | Simplify granularity by omitting dimensions |
Tips
FIXED works well with filters after context filters are applied.
INCLUDE/EXCLUDE are dependent on the view's structure and work before most filters.
Combine LOD expressions with parameters and filters to build powerful interactive dashboards.
Conclusion:
LOD expressions unlock a new dimension of analysis in Tableau. Whether you're building KPIs, benchmarking performance, or conducting cohort analysis, understanding and using LODs can make your visualizations smarter and more accurate.
